606 Brangäne, provisional designation1906 VB, is anasteroid from the central regions of theasteroid belt, approximately 36 kilometers (22 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 18 September 1906, by astronomerAugust Kopff at theHeidelberg Observatory in southwest Germany.[1] The unusualK-type asteroid is the namesake of the smallBrangäne family and has arotation period of 12.3 hours.[10] It was named afterBrangaine, a character from the operaTristan und Isolde byRichard Wagner.[2]

Orbit and classification

[edit]

Brangäne is the principal body of the stonyBrangäne family,[4][13] a smallasteroid family of less than 200 known members.[14] It orbits the Sun in thecentral main-belt at a distance of 2.0–3.2 AU once every 4 years and 2 months (1,520 days;semi-major axis of 2.59 AU). Its orbit has aneccentricity of 0.22 and aninclination of 9° with respect to theecliptic.[3]

Physical characteristics

[edit]

In theSMASS classification,Brangäne is an uncommonK-type asteroid,[3] while in theTholen classification itsspectral type is ambiguous, closest to aT-type and somewhat similar to that of anS- andD-type.[3]

Rotation period

[edit]

In November 2006, a rotationallightcurve ofBrangäne was obtained fromphotometric observations by French amateur astronomers Raymond Poncy andRené Roy. Lightcurve analysis gave arotation period of12.2950±0.0001 hours with a brightness amplitude of 0.20magnitude (U=3-).[10][11]

Diameter and albedo

[edit]

According to the surveys carried out by the Infrared Astronomical SatelliteIRAS, the JapaneseAkari satellite and theNEOWISE mission of NASA'sWide-field Infrared Survey Explorer,Brangäne measures between 28.15 and 36.18 kilometers in diameter and its surface has analbedo between 0.096 and 0.13.[5][6][7][8][9] TheCollaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link adopts an albedo of 0.1075 and a diameter of 36.96 kilometers, based on anabsolute magnitude of 10.2, fromPetr Pravec's revised WISE-data.[10]

Naming

[edit]

Thisminor planet was named afterBrangaine, a character from the operaTristan und Isolde byRichard Wagner. The official naming citation was mentioned inThe Names of the Minor Planets byPaul Herget in 1955 (H 64).[2]
