The54th British Academy Film Awards, more commonly known as theBAFTAs, took place on 25 February 2001 at theOdeon Leicester Square inLondon, honouring the best national and foreign films of2000. Presented by theBritish Academy of Film and Television Arts, accolades were handed out for the best feature-length film and documentaries of any nationality that were screened atBritish cinemas in 2000.[1]
Ridley Scott'sGladiator wonBest Film, whileAng Lee wonBest Director forCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.Billy Elliot was voted Outstanding British Film of 2000; the film's lead actor,Jamie Bell, wonBest Actor in a Leading Role. In addition,Julia Roberts wonBest Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal ofErin Brockovich inErin Brockovich,Benicio del Toro wonBest Actor in a Supporting Role for his role inTraffic, andJulie Walters wonBest Actress in a Supporting Role for her role inBilly Elliot.[2][3] The nominees were announced on 31 January 2001.[4]
Stephen Fry andMariella Frostrup co-hosted the ceremony together, marking the first time the ceremony had two hosts in over 10 years.
