K-type giant star in the constellation Auriga
51 Aurigae is a single[ 8] star in the northernconstellation ofAuriga . It is visible to the naked eye as a dim, orange-hued star with anapparent visual magnitude of about 5.70.[ 2] Based onparallax , it is located some 464 light-years (142 parsecs) away from theSun .[ 1] It is receding from the Earth with a heliocentricradial velocity of 32 km/s.[ 4]
At 2.2 billion years old,[ 7] 51 Aurigae has evolved off from themain sequence and is now aK-type giant star .[ 2] It is 1.58 times as massive as the Sun,[ 6] 24.5 times as wide, and 178 times as luminous.[ 1] It emits radiation from itsphotosphere with aneffective temperature of about 4,277K .[ 6]
