The31stNational Film Awards, presented byDirectorate of Film Festivals, the organisation set up byMinistry of Information and Broadcasting, India to felicitate the best ofIndian Cinema released in the year 1983.[1] Ceremony took place in June 1984 and awards were given by thenPrime Minister of India,Indira Gandhi.

Three different committees were formed for feature films, short films and books on cinema, headed by veteran directorK. Balachander,S. Krishnaswamy and Justice G. D. Khosla respectively.[1]
