2759 Idomeneus/aɪdəˈmiːniːəs/ is a darkJupiter trojan from theGreek camp, approximately 55 kilometers (34 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 14 April 1980, by American astronomerEdward Bowell at theAnderson Mesa Station near Flagstaff, Arizona, in the United States, and later named afterIdomeneus from Greek mythology.[1] TheD-type asteroid from the Jovian background population belongs to the80 largest Jupiter trojans. It is a suspectedbinary system and potentially aslow rotator with arotation period of 479 hours.[12]
Idomeneus is a dark Jovianasteroid orbiting in the leading Greek camp at Jupiter'sL4Lagrangian point, 60° ahead of the Gas Giant's orbit in a1:1 resonance(seeTrojans in astronomy). It is also a non-family asteroid in theJovian background population.[4][5]
It orbits the Sun at a distance of 4.8–5.5 AU once every 11 years and 10 months (4,313 days;semi-major axis of 5.19 AU). Its orbit has aneccentricity of 0.07 and aninclination of 22° with respect to theecliptic.[3] The body'sobservation arc begins with aprecovery taken atPalomar Observatory in April 1954, or 26 years prior to its official discovery observation at Anderson Mesa.[1]
In theSDSS-based taxonomy,Idomeneus is aD-type asteroid.[11][13]Pan-STARRS' survey has also characterized it as a dark D-type, while theCollaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link (CALL) assumes it to be aC-type.[10] ItsV–I color index of 0.91, however, is typical for most larger D-type Jupiter trojans.[12]
In May 1991, a rotationallightcurve ofIdomeneus was obtained fromphotometric observations byStefano Mottola using the now decommissionedESO 1-metre telescope atLa Silla Observatory in Chile, with follow-up observation made in June 1992 and in November 2010. Lightcurve analysis gave arotation period between 32.38 and 32.4 hours with a brightness amplitude between 0.22 and 0.27magnitude (U=2+/2/2).[12][9]
In June 2016, observation byBrian Warner at the Palmer Divide Station (U82) at theCenter for Solar System Studies in California, gave an exceptionally long period479±5 hours and an amplitude of0.19±0.02 magnitude (U=2+), which makes it aslow rotator.[12][a]
The observations also indicated thatIdomeneus is abinary asteroid with aminor-planet moon in its orbit. The satellite'sorbital period is19.295±0.005 hours, or alternatively,32.17±0.02 hours with a brightness variation of 0.14 magnitude. However, the results are tentative and have not been published in any journal as of 2018.[12][a]
According to the surveys carried out by the JapaneseAkari satellite, the Infrared Astronomical SatelliteIRAS, and theNEOWISE mission of NASA'sWide-field Infrared Survey Explorer,Idomeneus measures between 52.55 and 61.01 kilometers in diameter and its surface has analbedo between 0.0571 and 0.078.[6][7][8] CALL derives an albedo of 0.0521 and a diameter of 60.95 kilometers based on anabsolute magnitude of 9.9.[12]

Thisminor planet was named after the Greek heroIdomeneus, who led theCretan armies to theTrojan War and where he slew many Trojans.[1] The official naming citation was published by theMinor Planet Center on 20 December 1983 (M.P.C. 8404).[14]
