The2025 season is theSan Francisco 49ers' 76th in theNational Football League (NFL), their 80th overall, their 12th playing their home games atLevi's Stadium and their ninth under thehead coach/general manager tandem ofKyle Shanahan andJohn Lynch. The 49ers improved on their 6–11 record fromlast year following a Week 11 victory against thedivision rivalArizona Cardinals. They will look to make a return to the playoffs after a one-year absence. The 49ers won all three games on the road against the Rams, Seahawks, and Cardinals.

This season marks the return ofRobert Saleh as defensive coordinator, replacingNick Sorensen, who was fired by the team after a single season.[1] Saleh had previously coordinated the 49ers' defense from 2017 to 2020, after which he spent three full seasons as the head coach of theNew York Jets before being relieved of his position just five games into the 2024 season.[2][3]

The 2025 offseason saw a number of significant departures in free agency, among them linebackerDre Greenlaw, guardAaron Banks, safetyTalanoa Hufanga, and cornerbackCharvarius Ward.[4] Additionally, the 49ers traded wide receiverDeebo Samuel to theWashington Commanders.[5] This will be the team's first season since 2018 without either Samuel or Greenlaw on its roster. The team's 8–4 start is their best since they started 7–3 in theirSuper Bowl LVIII-losing2023 season.
