The2025 São Paulo Grand Prix (officially known as theFormula 1 MSC Cruises Grande Prêmio de São Paulo 2025) was aFormula One motor race held on 9 November 2025 at theInterlagos Circuit inSão Paulo, Brazil. It was the twenty-first round of the2025 Formula One World Championship and the fifth of six Grands Prix in the season to utilise thesprint format.Lando Norris (McLaren) took pole position for thesprint and main race, converting them both to wins in the sprint ahead ofKimi Antonelli andGeorge Russell (bothMercedes), and the main race ahead of Antonelli andMax Verstappen (Red Bull), the latter having started from the pit lane and briefly led the race.
The event was held at theInterlagos Circuit inSão Paulo for the 42nd time in the circuit's history, having previously held thirty-seven editions of theBrazilian Grand Prix, across the weekend of 7–9 November.[3] The Grand Prix was the twenty-first round of the2025 Formula One World Championship and the fifth held under the name of theSão Paulo Grand Prix, having previously been titled the Brazilian Grand Prix.[4] It was also the fifth of six Grands Prix in the season to utilise thesprint format, and the fifth and last time overall that the São Paulo Grand Prix featured it.[5][6]
Going into the weekend,Lando Norris led theDrivers' Championship with 357 points, one point ahead ofOscar Piastri in second, and 36 points ahead ofMax Verstappen.McLaren, who won theConstructors' Championship at theSingapore Grand Prix, were ahead ofFerrari andMercedes, who were second and third with 356 and 355 points, respectively.[7]
The drivers and teams were the same as published in the season entry list with two exceptions;[8]Yuki Tsunoda atRed Bull Racing held the seat originally occupied byLiam Lawson before Lawson was demoted back toRacing Bulls from theJapanese Grand Prix onward,[9] andFranco Colapinto replacedJack Doohan atAlpine from theEmilia Romagna Grand Prix onward on a race-by-race basis.[10]
Tyre supplierPirelli brought the C2, C3, and C4 tyre compounds designated hard, medium, and soft, respectively, for teams to use at the event, a step harder thanthe previous year.[11]
The solefree practice session was held on 7 November 2025, and was scheduled to start at 11:30 local time (UTC−3) before being delayed to 11:35. The session was topped byLando Norris (McLaren) followed by his teammateOscar Piastri andNico Hülkenberg (Sauber).[1]
Sprint qualifying was held on 7 November 2025, at 15:30 local time (UTC−3), and determined the starting grid order for thesprint.[1]
As with regular qualifying, the sprint qualifying consisted of three sessions, with the five drivers with the worst lap times being eliminated following each of the first two sessions. For the first two sessions, new medium tyres were mandated, while the third and final session allowed teams to use any set of soft tyres.[12][13][14]
In the twelve-minute long first session (SQ1),Franco Colapinto (Alpine),Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls),Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull),Esteban Ocon (Haas), andCarlos Sainz Jr. (Williams) were eliminated. During the second session (SQ2), which lasted for ten minutes,Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari),Alexander Albon (Williams),Pierre Gasly (Alpine),Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber) andOliver Bearman (Haas) were eliminated.[12][13][14]
The third session (SQ3) lasted for eight minutes, and determined the final order of the remaining ten drivers.Lando Norris (McLaren) took pole position;Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) finished in second, with Norris's teammateOscar Piastri (McLaren) finishing in third.George Russell (Mercedes) andFernando Alonso (Aston Martin) finished in fourth and fifth, respectively, andMax Verstappen (Red Bull),Lance Stroll (Aston Martin),Charles Leclerc (Ferrari),Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls), andNico Hülkenberg (Sauber) completed the rest of the top ten.[12][13][14]
Notes
Thesprint was held on 8 November 2025, at 11:00 local time (UTC−3), and was run for 24 laps.[1][17]
Lando Norris (McLaren) converted pole position to a sprint victory ahead ofKimi Antonelli andGeorge Russell (bothMercedes).[18] Norris's teammateOscar Piastri andFranco Colapinto (Alpine) both crashed out at the same corner on lap six, which brought out the red flag.Nico Hülkenberg (Sauber) hit the same barrier, but the team was able to fix the car.[19] On lap 23,Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber) experienced two heavy shunts on the pit straight while chasingAlexander Albon (Williams), inflicting extensive damage to his car. After bottoming out while attempting to brake for the first turn, Bortoleto hit the pit wall, which briefly sent him airborne. Sliding across the track, he then hit the wall by theSenna Esses, and he ultimately came to a stop at the run-off area. Bortoleto was unhurt, but he was taken to the medical centre for checks – after which he was cleared – and his car required a rebuild that meant he was not able to take part in qualifying.[20][21]

Notes
The race was held on 9 November 2025, at 14:00 local time (UTC−3), and was run for 71 laps.[1]
Lando Norris (McLaren) held the lead through theSenna S asGabriel Bortoleto (Sauber) crashed out of his home Grand Prix after contact withLance Stroll (Aston Martin), bringing out the safety car.[30] Meanwhile,Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) made contact withCarlos Sainz Jr.'sWilliams before hitting the rear of Colapinto's Alpine, forcing him into the pit lane and giving the Ferrari driver floor damage; he reported issues with downforce and rear stability, and retired on lap 37,[31][32] marking the team's first double retirement since theDutch Grand Prix.[33]
As the safety car was withdrawn,Oscar Piastri (McLaren) locked up intoKimi Antonelli'sMercedes, which sent him into the Ferrari ofCharles Leclerc, which tore one of his tyres in a similar manner to his incident in Zandvoort, bringing out a virtual safety car. By this point, pit lane starterMax Verstappen (Red Bull) was in thirteenth, but puncture to the front-left hard tyre forced him to switch to medium tyres. By lap nine and the conclusion of the VSC period, Piastri was in second place, but would soon receive a ten-second penalty for his role in the Antonelli collision. Similarly, a ten-second penalty forYuki Tsunoda followed for causing a collision with Stroll, and another was granted after improperly serving it.[30]
By lap 56, Verstappen was fourth, behind both Mercedes cars.George Russell had to manage his brake temperature, so he started to lift and coast; Verstappen passed the Mercedes driver for third. However, he encountered Antonelli, who defended his second place to mark his highest Formula One career finish to date. Norris won the race by ten seconds, and Piastri finished in fifth, meaning Verstappen, who finished third after starting from the pit lane, was now one race win away from Piastri.[30]
