The2024 Singapore Grand Prix (officially known as theFormula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2024) was aFormula One motor race that was held on 22 September 2024 at theMarina Bay Street Circuit inMarina Bay,Singapore. It was the eighteenth round of the2024 Formula One World Championship.
A disrupted qualifying session was topped byLando Norris ofMcLaren, taking his sixth career pole position; he went on to lead all laps of the race to take victory overMax Verstappen ofRed Bull Racing and Norris' teammateOscar Piastri. This was McLaren's second win at the Marina Bay Street Circuit following the2009 race, and the first time that McLaren won consecutive Grands Prix since the final two races of the2012 season. It was the fastestSingapore Grand Prix, as well as the first not to feature at least onesafety car period or yellow flag.[3] This was the 257th and final race start for eight-time Grand Prix winnerDaniel Ricciardo, who finished in 18th place and took the fastest lap of the race; he was replaced byLiam Lawson from the followingUnited States Grand Prix onward.
The event was held at theMarina Bay Street Circuit inMarina Bay for the 15th time in the circuit's history, across the weekend of 20–22 September.[4] The Grand Prix was the eighteenth round of the2024 Formula One World Championship and the 15th running of theSingapore Grand Prix as a round of the Formula One World Championship.[5]
Going into the weekend,Max Verstappen led theDrivers' Championship with 313 points, 59 points ahead ofLando Norris in second, and 78 ahead ofCharles Leclerc in third.McLaren, holding 476 points, entered this round as the leader of theConstructors' Championship fromRed Bull Racing andFerrari, who were second and third with 456 and 425 points, respectively.[6]
The drivers and teams were the same as the season entry list with the exception ofFranco Colapinto, who replacedLogan Sargeant atWilliams from theItalian Grand Prix onwards.[7][8]Kevin Magnussen ofHaas returned to the grid, having served his one-race ban during the precedingAzerbaijan Grand Prix, with reserve driverOliver Bearman taking his place.[9]
The Grand Prix markedLewis Hamilton's 350th andCarlos Sainz Jr.'s 200th Grand Prix starts, respectively.[10] The Grand Prix also marked the 257th and final race start forDaniel Ricciardo ofRB, who left the team four days after achieving the fastest lap in the event. He was replaced byLiam Lawson from the followingUnited States Grand Prix onwards.[11]
Tyre supplierPirelli brought the C3, C4, and C5 tyre compounds (the softest three in their range) designated hard, medium, and soft, respectively, for teams to use at the event.[12]
A fourthDRS zone was added between turns 14 and 16 in the same section of the circuit that was reconfigured forthe previous iteration.[13]
Threefree practice sessions were held for the event.[14] The first free practice session was held on 20 September 2024, at 17:30 local time (UTC+8),[14] and was topped byCharles Leclerc ofFerrari ahead ofLando Norris ofMcLaren and Leclerc's teammateCarlos Sainz Jr.[15] The second free practice session was held on the same day, at 21:00 local time,[14] and was topped by Norris ahead of Leclerc and Sainz.[16] The third practice session was held on 21 September 2024, at 17:30 local time,[14] and was topped by Norris ahead ofGeorge Russell ofMercedes and Norris's teammateOscar Piastri.[17]
Qualifying was held on 21 September 2024, at 21:00 local time (UTC+8).[14]
A red flag was observed during Q3 forCarlos Sainz Jr.'s crash into the walls as he started his lap, damaging his car and forcing him out of further runs.[18]Lando Norris took pole position forMcLaren, his sixth career pole position and fifth of the season, ahead ofMax Verstappen in second andLewis Hamilton in third.[19]
The race was held on 22 September 2024, at 20:00 local time (UTC+8), and was run for 62 laps.[14]
The race was won by polesitterLando Norris in hisMcLaren, his third of the season. Championship leaderMax Verstappen and Norris's teammateOscar Piastri rounded out the podium. It was the fastestSingapore Grand Prix, as well as the first not to feature at least onesafety car or yellow flag, with the only retirements ofAlexander Albon andKevin Magnussen occurring in the pits.Daniel Ricciardo finished with the fastest lap, but was ineligible for the bonus point, coming home outside the top ten in 18th. This would be Ricciardo's 17th and final fastest lap, and his 257th and final race start, as he departedRB days after the race.[22] Norris's win took seven points out of Verstappen's Drivers' Championship lead, with 52 points separating the two drivers with six rounds to go. Verstappen'sRed Bull teammateSergio Pérez's tenth place finish increased McLaren's Constructors' Championship lead to 41 points.[23][24][25][26]
