The2024 elections for the Illinois Senate were held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. The general primary election for established political parties was held on March 19, 2024.[1]
Elections were held for 23 out of 59 seats in the Illinois Senate.[1]
DemocratJavier Cervantes was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[8] He was appointed to the Senate on November 18, 2022, to serve during veto session of the 102nd General Assembly.[9] No Republican candidate has filed to run against him in 2024.[10]
Democrat Kimberly Lightford was reelected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[8] She is running for re-election against Republican Robert Sumrell Jr.[10]
DemocratLakesia Collins was appointed to the Illinois Senate on August 15, 2023. There will be an election for the remaining two years of the term.[12] No Republican candidate has filed to run against her in 2024.[10]
The 7th district includes various neighborhoods on the north side of Chicago.[13] DemocratMike Simmons was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[8] He is running for reelection in 2024, once again unopposed.[10]
The 10th district includes various neighborhoods on the northwest side of Chicago and surrounding suburbs.[13] DemocratRobert Martwick was reelected to the Illinois Senate against nominal, write-in opposition in the 2022 general election.[8] He is seeking reelection against Republican Jon Luers.[10]
The 13th district stretches from downtown Chicago to the city's south side.[13] DemocratRobert Peters was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[8] He is running unopposed again in 2024.[10]
DemocratMichael Hastings was reelected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 50.59% of the vote.[8] He is running for reelection against Republican Samantha Jean Gasca, who won the nomination in a three-way race.[10]
DemocratNatalie Toro was appointed to the Illinois Senate on July 10, 2023, afterCristina Pacione-Zayas resigned to join theJohnson administration.[14] As the vacancy was filled with greater than 28 months remaining in the term, state statute requires an election be held.[15]
Toro was defeated by Graciela Guzmán in the Democratic primary.[10][3] Guzmán will face off against Republican Jason Proctor in the general election.[10]
DemocratKarina Villa was reelected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 58.72% of the vote.[8] She is running for reelection against Republican Heather Brown.[10]
DemocratLaura Murphy was reelected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 58.72% of the vote.[8] She is running for reelection unopposed.[10]
DemocratMary Edly-Allen was elected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 58.72% of the vote.[8] She is running for reelection unopposed.[10]
DemocratSteve Stadelman was reelected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 58.59% of the vote.[8] He is running for reelection against Republican Crystal Villarreal Soltow.[10]
The 37th district includes all or parts ofLee,Bureau,Henry,DeKalb,Ogle,Rock Island,Whiteside,Stark,Peoria,Woodford andMarshall counties.[13] RepublicanWin Stoller was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[8] Stoller is not running for reelection.[16] In the Republican primary, Chirs Bishop, a member of the Dixon City Council,[17] former Mayor of Dixon Li Arellano Jr,[18] and Henry County Board member Tim Yager ran to replace him.[19] Li Arellano Jr. won the primary and is unopposed in the general election.[10]
Former state legislatorTom Demmer declined to be a candidate.[20]
The 40th district includes the parts of theChicago Southland in Cook and Will counties and parts ofKankakee County.[13] DemocratPatrick Joyce was reelected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 55.34% of the vote.[8]
40th District Democratic primary details
Joyce was challenged by Democrat Kimberly Earling in the Democratic primary and will face off against Philip Nagel, the 2022 Republican nominee for the seat, in the general election.[21][10]
DemocratRachel Ventura was elected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 56.05% of the vote.[8] She is running for reelection against Republican Jennifer "Jen" Monson.[10]
The 46th district is located in Central Illinois and includes portions ofPeoria andBloomington-Normal.[13] DemocratDave Koehler was elected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 58.07% of the vote.[8] Koehler is running for reelection against Republican Sally Owens.[10]
DemocratMeg Loughran Cappel was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[8] She is being challenged for reelection by Republican Katie Deane-Schlottman.[10]
After successfully seeking reelection to the 103rd General Assembly,Scott M. Bennett died prior to inauguration. Then-Champaign Township AssessorPaul Faraci was appointed to the Illinois Senate and sworn into office on January 11, 2023.[22] Faraci is running for reelection against Republican Jeff Brownfield.[23]
State RepresentativeCarol Ammons, after seeking appointment to the seat following Bennett's death and exploring a primary run for the Democratic nomination against Faraci, opted instead to run for reelection to theIllinois House of Representatives.[24]
The 53rd district includes all or portions ofBureau,Ford,Grundy,Iroquois,LaSalle,Marshall,McLean,Peoria,Putnam,Tazewell,Will, andWoodford counties in central Illinois.[13] RepublicanJason Barickman was reelected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[8] After Barickman declined to take office for the 103rd General Assembly, RepublicanTom Bennett was appointed to the Illinois Senate to fill the vacancy.[25] As the vacancy was filled with greater than 28 months remaining in the term, state statute requires an election be held.[15] Bennett is not seeking reelection.[26]
Chris Balkema, Chair of the Grundy County Board, Susan Wynn Bence, Bennett's chief of staff, Mike Kirkton, a member of the Livingston County Board, and Jesse Faber were candidates for the Republican nomination.[26][27] Gary Manier, the Mayor ofWashington, and several others announced their respective candidacies, but did not file petitions by the deadline to run in the Republican primary.[27][28] Kirkton's petitions were challenged for insufficient signatures, but he remained on the primary ballot.[29][10]

The 55th district, located in downstate Illinois, includes all or parts ofRichland,Clay,Fayette,Marion,Clinton,Madison, andSt. Clair counties.[13] RepublicanJason Plummer was reelected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[8] He is running for reelection unopposed.[10]
RepublicanTerri Bryant was reelected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[8] Bryant is running for reelection and was challenged by Wesley Kash, a former Assistant State's Attorney in Jefferson County, in the Republican primary.[30] Bryant is unopposed in the general election.
