On September 12, 2024, fourIS–KP militants onmotorcycles opened fire atShiite Muslims andHazara people heading to greet pilgrims returning from theArba'in pilgrimage inKarbala,Iraq, killing fifteen people and injuring six others.[2][3]
On September 12, in Qorodal, four armed maskedIslamic State militants on motorcyclesambushed Shiites and Hazaras while they were on aminibus. Initially believing them to be government forces, the passengers followed their instructions. The four men instructed them to line up for a group photograph; after the passengers lined up, they were immediately shot. A survivor recounted the men kicking and shooting those who were wounded by gunfire, laughing as they did so. He himself survived after he fled and was shot, leading the perpetrators to believe he had died.[4] When the attack was over, the four men fled toGhor Province on their motorcycles.[5][6]
The fifteen victims were all Shia men including a dentist from Ghor Province. Most of the other victims were farmers. Fourteen people died at the site of the shooting, and one injured man died in hospital.[7]
TheTaliban government condemned the attack. In the immediate aftermath, victims' families' stated that the Taliban did not investigate the incident and had ignored a series of targeted attacks againstShiaHazaras.[8]
