Novak Djokovic with theCoupe des Mousquetaires Novak Djokovic defeatedCasper Ruud in the final, 7–6(7–1) , 6–3, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the2023 French Open . It was his thirdFrench Open title and record-breaking 23rd men's singlesmajor title overall, surpassingRafael Nadal 'sall-time record .[ 1] Djokovic became the first man to achieve atriple career Grand Slam in singles, and the oldest champion in French Open history at the age of 36 years and 20 days.[ 2]
Nadal was the reigning champion,[ 3] but withdrew due to a left hip injury. This was the first time the 14-time champion missed the tournament since his debut in2005 .[ 4] With his withdrawal, Nadal fell out of the top 100 of theATP rankings for the first time since 2003.[ 5]
By winning the title, Djokovic reclaimed theworld No. 1 singles ranking fromCarlos Alcaraz ;Daniil Medvedev andStefanos Tsitsipas were also in contention for the top position.[ 6] [ 7] Medvedev's loss toThiago Seyboth Wild in the first round marked the first time since2000 that the second seed (thenPete Sampras ) lost in the opening round. This was the first major since the2003 Wimbledon Championships where neither of the top two seeds were members of theBig Four .
