The76th annualCannes Film Festival took place from 16 to 27 May 2023.[1] Swedish filmmakerRuben Östlund served as jury president.[2] With the French filmAnatomy of a Fall winning thePalme d'Or, the festival's top prize,[3]Justine Triet became the third female director to achieve the prize, afterJane Campion in1993, andJulia Ducournau in2021.[4]

The official poster for the festival featuring actressCatherine Deneuve was created by Lionel Avignon and Stefan de Vivies of the design studio Hartland Villa from a photo taken by Jack Garofalo during the shooting ofLa Chamade (1968). The poster was chosen to pay tribute to Deneuve for her contributions to film.[5]

During the festival, twoHonorary Palme d'Or were awarded: the first one during the opening ceremony forMichael Douglas, and the second one was awarded on short notice forHarrison Ford before the world premiere ofIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.[6]

The festival opened withJeanne du Barry byMaïwenn[7][8] and closed withPixar'sElemental byPeter Sohn.[9][10]

TheCinéfondation section focuses on films made by students at film schools. The Cannes Film Festival allocates a €15,000 grant for the winner of the First Prize, €11,250 for the winner of the Second Prize and €7,500 for the winner of the Third Prize.
