Carlos Alcaraz defeatedCasper Ruud in the final, 6–4, 2–6, 7–6(7–1) , 6–3 to win the men's singles tennis title at the2022 US Open . It was his firstmajor title. Alcaraz claimed theworld No. 1 singles ranking for the first time with the win;[ 1] Ruud,Rafael Nadal ,Daniil Medvedev , andStefanos Tsitsipas were also in contention for the top position.[ 2] Hesaved a match point en route to the title, in the quarterfinals againstJannik Sinner .[ 3] Alcaraz was the youngest men's major champion since Nadal at the2005 French Open , the youngestUS Open champion sincePete Sampras in1990 , the first man born in the 2000s to win a major singles title, and the youngest man to be ranked world No. 1, surpassingLleyton Hewitt 's record.[ 4] [ 5] At 23 hours and 39 minutes of play duration across his seven matches, Alcaraz spent the longest time on court in major history (a record later surpassed by Medvedev at the2024 Australian Open ).[ 6]
Medvedev was the defending champion,[ 7] but lost in the fourth round toNick Kyrgios .[ 8] Medvedev was the first man outside theBig Four to be the top seed at a major sinceAndy Roddick at the2004 Australian Open .[ 9]
Nadal was vying for arecord-extending 23rd major singles title, but lost in the fourth round toFrances Tiafoe .[ 10] Alongside Medvedev's loss at the same stage, that marked the first US Open since2000 and the first major since the2017 Australian Open with neither of the top two seeded men reaching the quarterfinals.[ 11] This was also the four-time champion's final appearance at the US Open. Three-time championNovak Djokovic withdrew prior to the tournament as he could not travel to the United States, due to not having complied with the federal government'svaccination policy for non-US citizens againstCOVID-19 .[ 12]
This marked the third consecutive US Open where a player claimed his first major title, afterDominic Thiem in2020 and Medvedev in2021 .[ 13] The quarterfinal line-up guaranteed a first-timemajor champion ,[ 14] while the semifinal line-up marked the first time all four players made their US Open semifinal debut since the inaugural edition in1881 .[ 15] Tiafoe was the first American man to reach the semifinals since Roddick in2006 , the firstAfrican American man to do so sinceArthur Ashe in1972 , and the first African American man to reach any major semifinal sinceMaliVai Washington in1996 .[ 16] Sinner was the youngest man to reach thequarterfinals at all four majors since Djokovic in2008 .[ 17]
This was the first edition of US Open to feature a10-point tie-break , when the score reaches six games all in the deciding set.[ 18] Pedro Cachin defeatedAljaž Bedene in the first round in the first main-draw 10-point tie-break at the US Open.
