An election was held on November 8, 2022, to elect all 110 members toMichigan'sHouse of Representatives. The election coincided withelections for other offices, includinggovernor,State Senate andU.S. House of Representatives.^[2]Democrats won a majority of 56 out of 110 seats, winning control of the chamber for the first time since2008.^[3]

This was the first election to take place after redistricting based on the2020 United States census. Following the approval of avoter-initiated constitutional amendment in2018, the responsibility for legislative and congressionalreapportionment was transferred from the state legislature to a 13-member citizenscommission.^[5] Many blamed the maps drawn by Republicans after the2010 census for enabling the party to maintain control of the legislature throughout the decade despite losing the statewide popular vote multiple times.^[6] In2020, theRepublican Party had narrowly retained their majority of the chamber.^[7]

Despite expectations that Republicans would maintain control,Democrats gained three seats, giving them a majority of 56 out of 110 seats and winning control of the chamber for the first time since2008.^[3] Simultaneously with Democrats gains in thestate senate, winning control of that chamber the first time since 1984, and GovernorGretchen Whitmerwinning re-election, Democrats won atrifecta in the state for the first time in 40 years.^[8] Democrats benefited from a more favorable map than they had in the previous decade, as well as the down-ballot effects of Whitmer's victory and the passage of areferendum on abortion rights.^[3][9]
