IncumbentDemocratShirley Weber was appointed to the position in December 2020 bygovernorGavin Newsom. Newsom had appointed incumbent secretary of stateAlex Padilla to succeedKamala Harris as California's juniorU.S. senator after Harris was electedVice President of the United States in 2020.
