The2022 Brussels summit was a meeting of theheads of state andheads of government ofNATO held inBrussels, Belgium, on 24 March 2022.[1] The meeting took place in the wake of theRussian invasion of Ukraine.
On the day, NATO hosted meetings ofG7 leaders.[2][3] Ukraine PresidentVolodymyr Zelenskyy attended by video conference and addressed the summit.[4][5][6] Zelenskyy requested NATO states provide Ukraine with military equipment including aircraft, tanks, and armoured vehicles.[4] He also called for NATO toestablish a no-fly zone to prevent air and missile attacks in Ukraine.[4] At the summit, some NATO states pledged to increase military spending.[7]
At the summit, leaders also agreed to extend the term ofSecretary GeneralJens Stoltenberg for another year until September 2023.[8]
Following the summit, the leaders released a joint statement condemning Russian attacks on civilians and calling on Russia to immediately suspend military operations in Ukraine as had beenordered by theInternational Court of Justice a week earlier.[9]
