Hearts began the season under the stewardship of ManagerRobbie Neilson, who had been appointedfollowing the clubs relegation to theScottish Championship following the incompletion of the2019–20 season.[11][12] At the start of the 2022–23 season Neilson was awarded a new three-year contract.[13]

Following a decline in form[14] on 9 April 2023,[15] Neilson parted ways with the club.[16] His assistantLee McCulloch also departed the club.[17]Steven Naismith was appointed interim manager until the end of the season, assisted byGordon Forrest andFrankie McAvoy.[18]

International Selection

Over the course of the season a number of the Hearts squad were called up on international duty.Craig Gordon,Zander Clark andLawrence Shankland was called up to representScotland,[19] whilstNathaniel Atkinson,Cameron Devlin andKye Rowles were selected to representAustralia[20] both in friendlies and at the2022 FIFA World Cup.[21]
