Analysis

[edit]

Biden won the state by 20 points, a notable improvement fromHillary Clinton's 13-point win in the state in2016. He fared especially well inFairfield County, an ancestrally Republican area, as well as theHartford suburbs. Biden also came within 5 points of flipping traditionally RepublicanLitchfield County, which had previously voted Democratic in2008; and 4.2 points of flipping traditionally DemocraticWindham County, which had previously voted Democratic in2012.

Perexit polls by theAssociated Press, Biden's strength in Connecticut came fromcollege-educated andhigh income voters.[37] Biden won a combined 70% in large cities and 62% insuburban areas, a key demographic in a heavily suburban state. Biden built on Hillary Clinton's gains in suburbanFairfield County, even flipping three towns:Trumbull,Brookfield, andSherman.[38][39] Trumbull and Brookfield last voted Democratic in1964, while Sherman last voted Democratic in 2008.[40]

Biden is the first presidential nominee ever to exceed 1 million votes in the state. Additionally, his total is currently the highest that any candidate in any race in Connecticut has received, surpassing the previous record of 1,008,714 thatRichard Blumenthal received in his2016 Senate race. At the same time, Biden became the first Democrat to win the White House without carrying Windham County sinceWoodrow Wilson in1916.[41] He also become the first Democrat to win without the town ofGriswold since1888, the first to win without the town ofSprague since1892, the first to win without the towns ofKillingly,Plainfield,Putnam, andStafford since1916, the first to win withoutLisbon andPlainville since1948, and the first to win without the town ofSalem since1960.[42][failed verification]
