Rafael Nadal defeatedDaniil Medvedev in the final, 7–5, 6–3, 5–7, 4–6, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the2019 US Open.[1] It was his fourthUS Open title and 19thmajor title overall. Nadal's victory meant that every major title since the beginning of2017 had been won by either himself (5),Novak Djokovic (4) orRoger Federer (3). This was the first time since 2006–08 thatDjokovic, Federer, and Nadal had claimed all four major singles titles across three consecutive years.[2]
Djokovic was the defending champion,[3] but retired due to a left shoulder injury againstStan Wawrinka in the fourth round. This was the first time since2006 that Djokovic failed to reach the US Open semifinals (not counting the2017 tournament, which he missed due to injury).[4]
This marked the first major main-draw appearance for future major champion and world No. 1Jannik Sinner; he lost to Wawrinka in the first round.[5] This was the final US Open appearance of five-time champion Federer; he lost in the quarterfinals to Dimitrov.[6] This was also the final professional appearance of former world No. 4 and2010 Wimbledon finalistTomáš Berdych, who lost in the first round toJenson Brooksby.[7]
