The2019 Philadelphia mayoral election was held on November 5, 2019, to elect themayor ofPhiladelphia,Pennsylvania. IncumbentmayorJim Kenney, firstelected in 2015, ran for reelection.

Kenney's platform included raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour, providing city support for the maintenance ofsupervised injection sites, implementing a citysoda tax, and ensuring the city's compliance with theParis Climate Agreement. Ciancaglini promised to end Philadelphia's status as asanctuary city and cancel plans to establish the supervised injection sites.

Background

[edit]

No Republican had won a Philadelphia mayoral election sinceBernard Samuelin 1947.[1]

Kenney easily won in his bid for re-election to a second term; however, this was the first election since the nationally controversial2003 election in which the Republican nominee managed to carry a ward, with Ciancaglini carrying slightly fewer wards than 2003 Republican nomineeSam Katz. Despite an easy landslide victory, there was increased dissatisfaction with Kenney and his administration, which continued months after the election.
