They were led by second-year head coachSean Lewis and played their home games atDix Stadium inKent, Ohio, as members of the East Division of theMid-American Conference.[1]

Trailing 6–27 in the fourth quarter againstBuffalo with a 3–6 record, Kent State proceeded to score 24 unanswered points in the last eight minutes of the game to win 30–27, and later followed that victory with two additional wins to reach bowl eligibility for the first time since 2012. Kent State were then invited to theFrisco Bowl where they defeatedUtah State with a 51–41 score.
