The2017–18 Sheffield Shield season was the 116th season of theSheffield Shield, theAustralian domesticfirst-classcricket competition. It started on 26 October 2017 and finished on 27 March 2018.[1] The opening round of matches were played asday/night fixtures[2] and the first three rounds of matches took place before theAshes series.[3]Victoria were the defending champions.[4]

In round two of the competition,Mitchell Starc became the first bowler to take ahat-trick in each innings of afirst-class cricket match in Australia.[5] He became the second Australian, and the eighth bowler overall, to do so in a first-class match.[6]

In the final round of fixtures,Tasmania beat the defending champions, Victoria, by 156 runs to advance to their first Sheffield Shield final since the2012–13 season.[7] They facedQueensland atAllan Border Field inBrisbane.[7][8] In the final, Queensland beat Tasmania by nine wickets to win their eighth title and their firstsince 2012.[9][10] This was also the final season forDoug Bollinger,Ed Cowan,Ben Cutting andMichael Klinger.[11]
