The tournament was part of theATP World Tour Masters 1000 of the2016 ATP World Tour, and of theWTA Premier 5 tournaments of the2016 WTA Tour, and was also a2016 US Open Series event. The men's event was held at theAviva Centre inToronto, from 25 to July 31 and the women's event was held at theUniprix Stadium inMontreal, from July 25 to July 31. The event was scheduled two weeks earlier than the usual early-August date to avoid conflicting with the2016 Summer Olympics.
