Analysis

[edit]
A map of the most college-educated counties in the United States

Like everyRepublican nominee since 1996, Donald Trump carriedMontana's threeelectoral votes. He won by a large margin, and he swept most of theplains counties ineastern Montana, traditionally the mostconservative part of the state, by staggering margins sometimes exceeding 60 points. The eastern part of the state has benefited from therecent energy boom in neighboringNorth Dakota, and its populace is suspicious and disapproving of theenvironmental movement championed byDemocrats in recent elections.

Most counties in thewestern part of the state were also traditionallyRepublican, with aranching-basedeconomy heavily dependent on the raising and production ofcattle andhay, particularly in the counties borderingIdaho such asBeaverhead County andRavalli County. However, an influx of retirees from theWest Coast have made the western region more competitive in recent elections.[13]

The only significant counties won by Clinton wereMissoula County, where the city ofMissoula is located,Gallatin County, whereBozeman is located, andBig Horn County andGlacier County, which are both majorityNative American. While sweeping most of the rural, majoritywhite conservative counties of the state, Trump also won inLewis and Clark County where the capital city ofHelena is located, in neighboringCascade County whereGreat Falls is located, and inYellowstone County where the city ofBillings is located.[14]

Trump became the first Republican to win the White House without carryingGallatin County sinceWilliam McKinley in1900. This was because Gallatin County (home toMontana State University) is the most highly-educated county in Montana, with a majority of adult residents in the county having a Bachelor's degree (see the map), and was the only county in the state to swing towards Clinton.[15]
