The2016–17 season was the 120th season of competitivefootball in Scotland. The domestic season began on 16 July 2016, with the first round of the2016–17 Scottish League Cup.[1] The2016–17 Scottish Professional Football League season commenced on 6 August.[1]

  1. ^Teams played each other three times (33 matches), before the league split into two groups (the top six and the bottom six) for the last five matches.
  2. ^Since the winners of the2016–17 Scottish Cup,Celtic, qualified for European competition based on league position, the spot awarded to the Scottish cup winners (Europa League second qualifying round) was passed to the second-placed team and the spot awarded to the second-placed team (Europa League first qualifying round) was passed to the fourth-placed team.

TheScotland women's national football team qualified for a major tournament for the first time.[7][8] A loss byFinland againstPortugal confirmed thatScotland would finishqualifying as one of the six best runners-up, guaranteeing a place inUEFA Women's Euro 2017.[7][8]
