The2016–17 Club Atlético Boca Juniors season is the 88th consecutivePrimera División season for the senior squad. During the season, Boca Juniors will take part in thePrimera División,Copa Argentina and in theSemifinals of theCopa Libertadores.
In the first days of June, 3 players arrived to the club:Fernando Zuqui, fromGodoy Cruz, in the transfer it was included money forGuillermoPol Fernández;Darío Benedetto, fromClub América; andWalter Bou, who was loaned fromGimnasia y Esgrima (LP).[1] Also,Lisandro Magallán andGonzalo Castellani returned from their loans inDefensa y Justicia andLanús. Additionally,Alexis Rolín left the club. After 7 years and more than 150 games in the club,Cristian Erbes left Boca to play inMexican teamVeracruz.[2] The season started with a 4–0 win overGüemes in the Round of 64 of theCopa Argentina.
Santiago Vergini signed with Boca despite that the medical check wasn't good.Nicolas Benegas is loaned toQuilmes. Boca lost their first match of Copa Libertadores, in theSemifinals, 2–1 againstIndependiente del Valle; and in the second leg, Boca lost again, in an incredible match 3-2 and it was eliminated in the Semifinals.Fernando Tobio returned toPalmeiras.Andrés Chávez is loaned toSão Paulo.[3]Daniel Díaz is transferred toGetafe CF.[4]Nicolás Lodeiro is transferred toSeattle Sounders FC.[5]César Meli signed forSporting CP on a one-year loan.[6]Talleres (C) made use of the option to purchaseJuan Cruz Komar permanently.[7]
Sebastián Palacios is transferred toTalleres (C).[8] Also, 4 more players arrived to the club:Sebastián Pérez, fromAtlético Nacional;Axel Werner, who was loaned fromAtlético Madrid;Ricardo Centurión, who was loaned fromSão Paulo andFernando Tobio, who was loaned again fromPalmeiras.[9] After 5 years and more than 200 games,Agustín Orión left the club to play inRacing Club.[10] On August 23 Boca won 2–1 overSantamarina in the Round of 32 of theCopa Argentina.Wílmar Barrios andNazareno Solís are transferred fromDeportes Tolima andTalleres (C). The new players were publicly introduced in the last days of August.[11] At the start of thePrimera División tournament Boca played againstLanús losing 1–0.Franco Cristaldo is loaned toRayo Vallecano.[12]
Leandro Marín is loaned toArsenal.Nicolás Colazo is loaned toAustralian teamMelbourne City.[13] The first match of September was a 3–0 victory overBelgrano. After that a 1–1 draw againstGodoy Cruz and a 4–1 win vsQuilmes with a hat-trick ofDarío Benedetto. Boca advanced to theQuarterfinals of Copa Argentina after the victory overLanús in thepenalty shoot-out.
The month started with a 1–1 draw againstTigre and a 2–0 victory overSarmiento.Gonzalo Castellani is loaned toDefensa y Justicia. Boca played inTucumán againstAtlético Tucumán achieving a 2–2 draw. After that a 4–0 win overTemperley.
Boca lost againstRosario Central in theQuarterfinals of Copa Argentina; Boca will not play any CONMEBOL tournaments in 2017. Boca won the first match away, 3–0 inLa Plata againstGimnasia y Esgrima (LP). On November 11 in Spain, Boca won theAntonio Puerta Trophy 4–3 againstSevilla.D.C. United acquiresLuciano Acosta on a permanent transfer after the expiration of his one-year loan.[14] Boca couldn't won againstRosario Central in the local tournament, it was a 1–1 draw. Boca won the derby againstSan Lorenzo, after several monthsFernando Gago returned to the first team.
In the first match of December, Boca got a great win 4–2 overRacing Club; and 4–2 againstRiver Plate in theSuperclásico. In the last match of 2016 Boca won 4–1 againstColón. After a lot of rumors finally was confirmed that the last idol of the club,Carlos Tevez is transferred toShanghai Shenhua ofChina.[15][16]
Adrián Cubas signed forPescara on a six-month loan.[17] After a 2–0 victory overEstudiantes (LP) inMar del Plata, and a 2–2 draw againstSan Lorenzo Boca was crowned championship of the Copa de Oro. On the last friendlySuperclasico,River Plate defeated Boca 2–0, the match was played inMar del Plata.César Meli is transferred toRacing Club.[18]
On February 2 Boca lost 5–3 in penalties after a 1–1 draw in a friendly againstChivas de Guadalajara inJalisco.Oscar Benítez is loaned to Boca fromBenfica on an 18-month loan and the goalkeeperAgustín Rossi is transferred fromEstudiantes (LP).[19] On February 11 Boca lost 3–1 againstAldosivi.Federico Carrizo is transferred toRosario Central.[20] The last friendly of the summer was a 2–1 victory overColón.
In the long-awaited return of the tournament Boca beatBanfield 2–0. And then suffered the first defeat in La Bombonera againstTalleres (C). After that loss Boca won a difficult game 2–1 inSan Juan againstSan Martín.
In the first game of April Boca win 1–0 againstDefensa y Justicia. And then, a 3–1 win overVélez Sarsfield, keeping Boca in the first place of the table. But a 1–1 draw againstPatronato and a 0–0 draw againstAtlético de Rafaela made Boca lose 4 important points. In the last match of April Boca won 3–0 overArsenal.
Boca started May with a 0–0 draw againstEstudiantes (LP). In the secondSuperclasico Boca played very badly and lost 3–1; but then Boca won 1–0 overNewell's Old Boys and drew 1–1 againstHuracán.
Boca, showing great football won 3-0 the derbi overIndependiente, and after that a 4–0 win overAldosivi. On June 20, San Lorenzo won 1–0 over Banfield, the only team with chances to reach Boca at the top, so that Boca became the champion of 2016–17 Primera División. In the last away match Boca drew 2–2 againstOlimpo. In the last match of the tournament Boca won 2–1 overUnión. With 21 goalsDarío Benedetto finished as the tournament goalscorer.
