The2013 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach was the 39th annual running of theToyota Grand Prix of Long Beach,[2] and is also the third race of the2013 IndyCar Series season, taking place on April 21, 2013 inLong Beach, California on its temporary street circuit. The race was won byTakuma Sato ofA. J. Foyt Enterprises.
The first two rounds of the season were dominated byAndretti Autosport driversJames Hinchcliffe and defending series championRyan Hunter-Reay, with Hinchcliffe winning theHonda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and Hunter-Reay winning theIndy Grand Prix of Alabama. Thedefending race winner wasWill Power.
Dario Franchitti ofChip Ganassi Racing won his firstpole position of 2013 after posting a qualifying lap speed of 105.369 mph (169.575 km/h) and a time of 1:07.2379.Ryan Hunter-Reay started in second with a speed of 105.282 mph (169.435 km/h), whileWill Power andTakuma Sato started in third and fourth, respectively.[3] In the second group of the first session,Marco Andretti was penalized for interference, and did not advance, starting in 26th.[4]
Pole-sitterDario Franchitti dominated the first 28 laps before falling behindWill Power. Power led until lap 30, in which he pitted, giving the lead toTakuma Sato, who did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the race to win his first career race in 52 starts,[5] becoming the first Japanese driver to win an IndyCar Series race.[6] The win wasA. J. Foyt Enterprises' first victory sinceAirton Daré won theAmeristar Casino Indy 200 atKansas in2002.[7][8]Graham Rahal finished second,Justin Wilson and Franchitti finished third and fourth, respectively.[9]J. R. Hildebrand,Oriol Servia,Marco Andretti,Simon Pagenaud,Simona de Silvestro andHélio Castroneves rounded out the top ten.[10]
