It was the 20th edition of theEstoril Open for the men (the 13th for the women), and was part of theATP World Tour 250 series of the2009 ATP World Tour, and of theInternational-level tournaments of the2009 WTA Tour. Both the men's and the women's events took place at theEstádio Nacional inOeiras, Portugal, from 2 May through 10 May 2009.

The men's draw was headlined byGilles Simon, former2002 and2006 championDavid Nalbandian and2003 championNikolay Davydenko. Other players includedDavid Ferrer,Mardy Fish and2001 championJuan Carlos Ferrero.

The women's draw was headlined by2004 and2008 finalistIveta Benešová and2008 championMaria Kirilenko. Other players includedShahar Pe'er andAnna-Lena Grönefeld.
