The2009–10 English football season isWigan Athletic's fifth consecutive season in thePremier League.

AfterSteve Bruce left the club to join Sunderland,[1] the club approachedSwansea City managerRoberto Martínez. The Spaniard signed a three-year deal with Wigan on 15 June, bringing four backroom staff with him.[2]

The new manager's first signing wasJordi Gómez, who signed fromRCD Espanyol.[3] The club then confirmed three pre-season fixtures, all away, toCrewe Alexandra,Preston North End andNorwich City.[4]

The departure ofEcuadorian wingerAntonio Valencia was confirmed on 30 June, as the 23-year-old moved toManchester United for a club-record fee rumoured to be around£16 million.[5][6] The club then announced the signing ofHendry Thomas fromHonduran sideOlimpia on a three-year deal.[7]

Trinidadian strikerJason Scotland became Martínez's third signing when he agreed a two-year deal on 15 July.[8] Republic of Ireland under-21 internationalJames McCarthy then agreed a five-year deal, joining fromScottish Premier League sideHamilton Academical.[9]

Chelsea wingerScott Sinclair signed a one-year loan deal with the club, and Martínez also signed SpaniardsRomán Golobart andAbian Serrano.Rayo Vallecano centre-halfAntonio Amaya was also snapped up on the eve of the new season on a three-year deal.[10][11][12] Meanwhile, former managerSteve Bruce brought midfielderLee Cattermole toSunderland for £6 million.[13]

There was further movement in the transfer market as Martínez signed defensive midfielderMohamed Diamé after complications suffered with Diamé's medical.[14][15] The club then confirmed the departure of midfielderMichael Brown toPortsmouth after two years and 64 appearances.[16]
