2008 tennis event results
Maria Sharapova defeatedAna Ivanovic in the final, 7–5, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the2008 Australian Open.[1] It was her thirdmajor singles title, and she became the first Russian to win the title. Sharapovadid not lose a set during the tournament, or face a tiebreak in any set. It was Ivanovic's second runner-up finish in as many major finals, though she would win theFrench Open a few months later.
Serena Williams was the defending champion, but was defeated in the quarterfinals byJelena Janković.
Justine Henin's winning streak of 33 matches (beginning at the2007 Rogers Cup) ended with her defeat in the quarterfinals to Sharapova.
Agnieszka Radwańska became the first Pole to reach a major quarterfinal in theOpen Era, and the first to do so sinceJadwiga Jędrzejowska in the1939 Wimbledon Championships.
This was the firstAustralian Open appearance forfuture championCaroline Wozniacki, who lost to Ivanovic in the fourth round.
