Cara Black andLiezel Huber were the defending champions, but did not play together. Black partnered withRennae Stubbs and Huber partnered withMartina Navratilova but both pairs lost toYan Zi andZheng Jie, in the semifinals and quarterfinals respectively.

Yan and Zheng defeatedVirginia Ruano Pascual andPaola Suárez in the final, 6–3, 3–6, 6–2 to win the ladies' doubles tennis title at the 2006 Wimbledon Championships.^[1]^[2] With their loss in the final, Ruano Pascual and Suárez missed the chance of completing thecareer Grand Slam.
