The2000 United States presidential election in Virginia took place on November 7, 2000, and was part of the2000 United States presidential election. Voters chose 13 representatives, or electors, to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.
Virginia had not gone Democratic in a presidential contest since1964, and was won by TexasGovernorGeorge W. Bush with a margin of victory of 8.03%.[2]
At the time, Virginia was considered to be a reliably Republican state. This was the last time Virginia voted to the right ofWest Virginia. Virginia would not vote Democratic again until2008. Until 2024, this was the last time Virginia voted for the loser of the popular vote.
As of the2024 presidential election[update], this was the last time thatRussell County,Southampton County, and the independentCity of Norton voted Democratic for president, and the last timeFairfax County,Albemarle County, and the independent cities ofFairfax,Danville, andWilliamsburg voted Republican for president.[3]
