The2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup final was asoccer match played on February 27, 2000 at theMemorial Coliseum,Los Angeles to determine the winner of the2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup.Canada beat inviteesColombia 2–0. This was Canada's firstGold Cup title and its second major title, the first since the1985 CONCACAF Championship. As the Gold Cup champions, Canada representedCONCACAF at the2001 FIFA Confederations Cup inJapan.[1]
To date, this remains the only CONCACAF Gold Cup final in which neither theUnited States norMexico reached, and the only final neither one won (they both went out in the quarterfinals)[2]
As the lowest-ranked member of theNorth American Football Union,Canada did not have an automaticCONCACAF Gold Cup berth. They instead had to play threequalification matches, held in October 1999 in the United States.[3] The Canadians qualified by leading the group ahead ofHaiti, the other qualified nation; below them wereCuba andEl Salvador, who both failed to qualify.[4]
Colombia, a member ofCONMEBOL was invited to the tournament byCONCACAF.Peru was also invited to the 2000 edition, making them the secondSouth American countries to play the Gold Cup afterBrazil, which participated in1996 and in1998. By reaching the final match, Colombia repeated the same record as Brazil in 1996.
Both, Colombia and Canada had been runner-ups in their groups during thegroup stage, respectively GroupsA andD. However, Canada andSouth Korea, another invited participant, tied in every criterion in Group D and the qualification had to be decided in thecoin toss, favoring Canada.[3][5]
At the time of the competition, Canada hadn't won a major title since 1985, while Colombia had yet to win a major title in its history.
