(S)-2,3-Oxidosqualene ((S)-2,3-epoxysqualene) is an intermediate in the synthesis of thecell membranesterolprecursorslanosterol andcycloartenol, as well assaponins. It is formed whensqualene isoxidized by the enzymesqualene monooxygenase. 2,3-Oxidosqualene is thesubstrate of variousoxidosqualene cyclases, includinglanosterol synthase, which produceslanosterol, a precursor tocholesterol.[1]
Thestereoisomer (R)-2,3-oxidosqualene is an inhibitor of lanosterol synthase.
