The1999–2000 Denver Nuggets season was the 24th season for theDenver Nuggets in theNational Basketball Association, and their 33rd season as a franchise.[1] It was also their first season playing at thePepsi Center.[2] The Nuggets had the 18th overall pick in the1999 NBA draft, and selected small forwardJames Posey out ofXavier University.[3][4][5] During the off-season, the team acquiredRon Mercer andPopeye Jones from theBoston Celtics,[6][7][8] and signed free agentGeorge McCloud.[9][8][10]

WithDan Issel back as head coach,[11][12] the Nuggets played .500 basketball with a 17–15 record to start the regular season,[13] but soon struggled and slipped below .500, holding a 21–27 record at the All-Star break.[14] At mid-season, Mercer was dealt along withChauncey Billups, who only played just 13 games due to a sprained ankle and a shoulder injury,[15][16][17] andJohnny Taylor to theOrlando Magic in exchange forTariq Abdul-Wahad, andChris Gatling;[18][19][20] however, Billups never played for the Magic, because of his shoulder injury.[21][22] The Nuggets posted a 7-game losing streak in March, asBryant Stith only played just 45 games due to a leg injury.[23] The team managed to win their final four games of the season, and finished in fifth place in theMidwest Division with a 35–47 record, missing theNBA playoffs for the fifth consecutive year.[24]

Antonio McDyess averaged 19.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game, whileNick Van Exel averaged 16.1 points and 9.0 assists per game, and led the Nuggets with 133 three-point field goals, and second-year starRaef LaFrentz provided the team with 12.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game. In addition, McCloud contributed 10.1 points per game and 107 three-point field goals off the bench, while second-year centerKeon Clark averaged 8.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game, and Posey provided with 8.2 points per game, and was named to theNBA All-Rookie Second Team.[25]

During theNBA All-Star weekend atThe Arena in Oakland inOakland, California, LaFrentz and Posey were both selected for theNBA Rookie Challenge Game, as LaFrentz was a member of the Sophomores team, while Posey was a member of the Rookies team;[26][27] LaFrentz scored 11 points along with 10 rebounds and 3 blocks, despite the Sophomores losing to the Rookies in overtime, 92–83.[27]

Following the season, Stith and second-round draft pickChris Herren were both traded to theBoston Celtics,[28][29][30] while Gatling was traded back to his former team, theMiami Heat, who then sent him to theCleveland Cavaliers in a three-team trade,[31][32][33] Jones was dealt to theWashington Wizards,[34] andCory Alexander signed as a free agent with theOrlando Magic.
