The51stCannes Film Festival took place from 13 to 24 May 1998.[3] American filmmakerMartin Scorsese served as jury president for the main competition.Isabelle Huppert was the host for the opening and closing ceremonies.[4]

Greek filmmakerTheo Angelopoulos won thePalme d'Or, the festival's top prize, for the drama filmEternity and a Day.[5][6][7][8]

The festival opened withPrimary Colors byMike Nichols,[9][10] and closed withGodzilla byRoland Emmerich.[11] Two new sections were added to the Official Selection: theUn Certain Regard and theCinéfondation.[12][13]
