1997 UK local government election
The1997 Southend-on-Sea Borough Council election took place on 1 May 1997 to elect members ofSouthend-on-Sea Borough Council inEssex ,England . This was on the same day as the1997 general election and otherlocal elections .
This was the first election to the council following its establishment as aunitary authority , with the council taking on the powers and responsibilities ofEssex County Council for the area. Due to this, the whole council was up for election. However, the ward boundaries and number of seats remained the same.
