The1996 United States presidential election in South Dakota took place on November 5, 1996. All 50 states andthe District of Columbia, were part of the1996 United States presidential election. Voters chose three electors to theElectoral College, which selected thepresident andvice president.

South Dakota was won byKansas SenatorBob Dole, who was running against incumbent United StatesPresidentBill Clinton ofArkansas. Clinton ran a second time with formerTennessee SenatorAl Gore as vice president, and Dole ran with formerNew YorkCongressmanJack Kemp.[1]

South Dakota weighed in for this election as 12 points moreRepublican than the national average. The presidential election of 1996 was a verymulti-partisan election for South Dakota, with more than ten percent of the electorate voting forthird-party candidates. Mostcounties turned out in this election for Dole. The major exceptions were the overwhelmingly Democratic majority-Native American counties ofShannon,Todd,Buffalo andDewey, and a number ofEast River counties near Minnesota includingBrown County, andSioux Falls'sMinnehaha County, which gave mostly pluralities to Clinton. In his second bid for the presidency,Ross Perot led the newly reformedReform Party to gain over nine percent of the votes in South Dakota, and to pull in support nationally as the most popular third-party candidate to run for United States Presidency in recent times.

As of the2024 presidential election[update], this is the last election in whichSouth Dakota was seriously contested, as well as the last timeBeadle County,Bon Homme County,Brule County,Charles Mix County,Deuel County,Grant County,Jerauld County,Kingsbury County,Sanborn County, andUnion County voted for a Democratic presidential candidate.[2]
