Apresidential election was held inIndiana on November 5, 1996, as part of the1996 United States presidential election. Voters chose 12 representatives, or electors to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.

Indiana was won by SenatorBob Dole (R-KS). The presidential contest in Indiana was not a surprise, with Dole winning 47.13% to 41.55% overPresidentBill Clinton (D) by a margin of 5.58%.[2] Billionaire businessmanRoss Perot (Reform Party of the United States of America-TX) finished in third, with a significant 10.50% of the popular vote.[2] Indiana would stay a Republican state until2008, in whichBarack Obama won by a close margin, the first Democratic victory in Indiana since1964.

Clinton did manage the feat of winning a plurality in exurban Chicago'sPorter County, which had previously voted Republican at every presidential election since that party was founded in 1854.[3] In doing so he broke the second-last still-standing streak of voting Republican from that party's first election in1856, leavingIllinoisCarroll County as the solitary county to have voted Republican at every presidential election since that party's formation. (Carroll County would eventually have its streak broken byBarack Obama in2008.)

Notably, Indiana was the only state located entirely east of the100th meridian west (generally the dividing line between the eastern and western halves of the country) and not a part of theSouth that never supported Clinton in either of his election victories; in fact, all other states with the same description backed Clinton both times.

As of the2024 presidential election[update], this is the last election in which the counties ofBlackford,Clark,Crawford,Floyd,Gibson,Jefferson,Knox,Pike,Posey,Sullivan,Switzerland, andWarrick voted for the Democratic presidential nominee.[4] This is also the last presidential election in which Hamilton County was the most Republican county in Indiana. This was the first and currently only election where a president served two terms and never carried Indiana. It is also the most recent single-digit victory by a Republican candidate in Indiana.
