Led by 20th-year head coachBobby Bowden, the Seminoles compiled an overall record of 10–2 with a mark of 7–1 in conference play, sharing the ACC title theVirginia. Florida State was invited to theOrange Bowl, where the Seminoles defeatedNotre Dame. The team played home games atDoak Campbell Stadium inTallahassee, Florida.

Running backWarrick Dunn finished ninth place in theHeisman Trophy voting. Florida State scored 563 points, setting a single-season program record.
