The1986 Alaska gubernatorial election took place on November 4, 1986, for the post ofGovernor of Alaska. Incumbent GovernorBill Sheffield, a Democrat who was seeking re-election, was defeated bySteve Cowper in the Democraticprimary election on August 26, 1986.[1][2]

In the general election,Democratic state RepresentativeSteve Cowper defeated Republican candidateArliss Sturgulewski andAlaska Independence candidateJoe Vogler. Sturgulewski had defeated former governorWally Hickel, former Libertarian nomineeDick Randolph, former State House SpeakerJoe L. Hayes, and former Alaskan Independence nomineeDon Wright for the Republican nomination.
