The1984 United States Senate election in Maine was held on November 7, 1984. IncumbentRepublican U.S. SenatorWilliam Cohen won re-election to a second term in a landslide over Democratic state representativeElizabeth "Libby" Mitchell. Both Cohen and Mitchell were unopposed in their party primaries.
Mitchell would later serve asSpeaker of the Maine House of Representatives from 1994 to 1997, andPresident of the Maine Senate from 2008 to 2010. She would also be the Democratic nominee forGovernor of Maine in2010, losing that election to RepublicanPaul LePage.
Cohen defeated Mitchell in a near-50-point landslide. Cohen carried all but fourmunicipalities in the state, with Mitchell winning onlyBrighton Plantation,Eagle Lake,Isle au Haut, and thePenobscot Indian Island Reservation.
