Elections in New Mexico

The1980 United States presidential election in New Mexico took place on November 4, 1980. All 50 states andThe District of Columbia, were part of the1980 United States presidential election. State voters chose four electors to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.

New Mexico was won by former CaliforniaGovernorRonald Reagan by an 18-point landslide.[1]President of the United StatesJimmy Carter failed to gain reelection against Reagan. New Mexico election results reflect theRepublican Party's re-consolidation under what is popularly called the "Reagan Revolution,"[2] which sounded overwhelmingconservative electoral victories across the United States. As of the2024 presidential election[update], this is the last time whenMcKinley County andGrant County voted for a Republican presidential candidate.[3] To date, Jimmy Carter remains the only Democrat to have been elected president without ever winning the state of New Mexico in an election since the state’s founding. He is also the first of only two presidents to have held office to have never won the state withDonald Trump having lost the state consecutively in2016,2020, and2024.
