Incumbent Republican U.S SenatorCharles Mathias won re-election to a third term in a landslide, defeating Democratic State SenatorEdward T. Conroy.

As of 2026, this is the last time a Republican won a U.S. Senate election in Maryland. It is also the last time a Republican wonPrince George's County andBaltimore City in a statewide election, and the last time a U.S. Senate candidate won every county in the state, althoughBarbara Mikulski won all butGarrett County in1992 and1998.
