The33rdCannes Film Festival took place from 9 and 23 May 1980.[3] American actorKirk Douglas served as jury president for the main competition. During the festival the showing ofAndrei Tarkovsky's filmStalker was notoriously interrupted by an electricians strike.[4]

ThePalme d'Or, the festival's top prize, was jointly awarded toAll That Jazz byBob Fosse andKagemusha byAkira Kurosawa.[5]

The festival opened withFantastica byGilles Carle,[6][7] and closed withI'm Photogenic byDino Risi.[8]
