Forest began their defence of the competition with a replayed victory overOldham Athletic, before a 5–0 win atOxford United. That set up a clash with fellowFirst Division sideEverton, and Forest won 3–2 atGoodison Park. A quarter-final win overBrighton & Hove Albion set up the semi-final withThird Division sideWatford. Forest won the 1st leg at home 3–1, and the 2nd leg was scoreless, and thus Forest qualified for their second successive final.[3]
Southampton began their run with wins over First DivisionBirmingham City andDerby County. In the fourth round they needed a replay to beatFourth Division sideReading; Southampton then defeatedManchester City 2–1 in the quarter-final. In the first leg of their semi-final withLeeds United they drew 2–2 away, before a 1–0 second leg victory.[3]
