Elections to the seventhOrissa Legislative Assembly were held 1977.[1]
The elections were held for 147 seats. A total of 604 candidates contested for these 147 seats.[2]
In 1974,Utkal Congress merged intoBharatiya Lok Dal to form Orissa Janata Party. Orissa Janata Party which also includedIndian National Congress (O) – where "O" stood for "Organisation" or "Old" along withSamyukta Socialist Party and theBharatiya Jana Sangh came together to formJanata Party to oppose Indira Gandhi and the Congress (R).
Three national parties,Communist Party of India,Indian National Congress, andJanata Party took part in the assembly election.
