Chris Evert defeatedEvonne Goolagong Cawley in the final, 6–3, 4–6, 8–6 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the1976 Wimbledon Championships.^[1] It was her secondWimbledon singles title and fifthmajor singles title overall.

Billie Jean King was the reigning champion, but had retired from singles play.^[2]

Three-time championMaria Bueno competed at Wimbledon for the first time since1968.
