The1974South American Championships in Athletics were held at theEstadio Nacional inSantiago, Chile, between 16 and 21 April. The competition was supposed to take place in the spring of 1973 but the1973 Chilean coup d'état forced its postponement to the following year.[1]
It was the first edition that featured men's20 kilometres walk, women's1500 metres and4 × 400 metres relay.
