General elections were held inDenmark on 4 December 1973 and in theFaroe Islands on 13 December.[1][2] It has since been referred to as theLandslide Election (Danish:Jordskredsvalget),[3] as five new or previously unrepresented parties won seats, and more than half the members of the parliament were replaced. TheSocial Democratic Party, which had led a minority government until this election, lost a third of their seats. After the electionPoul Hartling, the leader of the liberalVenstre, formed the smallest minority government in Denmark's history with only 22 seats, supported by theProgress Party, theConservative People's Party, theSocial Liberal Party, theCentre Democrats and theChristian People's Party.
Voter turnout was 89% in Denmark proper, 55% in theFaroe Islands and 66% inGreenland.[4]
Two parties, theChristian People's Party and theProgress Party, campaigned against a grant awarded by the government-runDanish Film Institute forThe Many Faces of Jesus, a proposedpornographic film aboutJesus.[5]
The USSR covertly funded theCommunist Party of Denmark.[6]
